Stardock just informed me that there was an update for DesktopX, so I went ahead and let it update (now running 2.40b[a].002). I restarted my computer and now no widgets will load. I get the "DXWidget.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" message. Anyone?

Howard BAM,

You are welcome, glad I could help.

DesktopX 2.4 is a mess

No objects resize from corners, widget list all screwed, program hang-ups and incompatibilities abound

Fix it Stardock

...please?

What are you talking about?

Objects dont' resize from corners. They never did.  There is no such thing as a "widget list".

I meant object list. And the picture frame and Core series clock most certainly did resize from the corner.

By the way Frogboy - it's probably not the best PR to insult and piss-off your customer base. I'm paying for this software -- I expect it to work. Judging by the number of questions, annoyances, and complaints on these forums, I'd think you and your team would be spending your time coding and fixing rather than telling your customers that they don't know what they are talking about (even if they don't).

mikecro63,

I am running version 2.40.035 and all is well.

The widgets all work, I can load themes and objects which all load and list correctly, and I can create themes.

Are you running the newest alpha 2.40c(a).002 version?

If so, you might have better luck going to SDCentral and uninstalling the current version without selecting "Delete all files including skins, themes and saved games" option. You may be required to reboot to complete operation.

If you then right-click DesktopX in the list and select "Restore archive...", then select the 2.40.035 version from that list, you could install and use it until the (rc) version or official released version of 2.40c.002 is available.

Hope this helps.

Well Mikecro, sorry but you don't know what you're talking about.

Just because some widget authors made their particular widgets resizeable doesn't mean all widgets are resizeable. And just because you purchased a product doesn't give you the right to be rude.

on Jan 27, 2005
I gotta tell ya Frogboy - you are digging yourself into a hole. I'd like you to tell me exactly how I have been "rude" in pointing out to you some potential flaws in the latest release of DesktopX - a product for which I have so far spent in excess of $50.00 on purchases.

I NEVER said that ALL objects should be resizable -- I pointed out that a few that formerly supported that function no longer did in this build of your software. In your first (highly unprofessional) response here you flat out told everyone that I "didn't know what I was talking about" by saying that objects should resize. In fact you stated that objects NEVER did resize from corners. Obviously, having checked in to it, you have realized that some authors have made widgets that do so. A rather disappointing fact that you didn't even know about this.

And NOW you have the audacity to tell me that I have no right to be "rude" just because some Joe did something with your software that you didn't expect them to. Let's think very carefully about who is being rude.

Here's the bottom line -- you told a customer they didn't know what they were talking about, when in fact YOU were in error about functionality of your software - and THEN you had the nerve to do it AGAIN.

Having purchased software DOES give me the right to register my disgust at the type of customer "support" I am receiving.

Complaint department can I help you Sir? I'm sorry Sir, you will have to take a no#. but we will be right with you as soon as all the data has come back in. I would like to thankyou for your Kindness and your Patience, you have been very coopertive.
Next please.

I have to say, mikro63 is definitely in the right here. After updating and finding that the functionality of his purchased product was now flawed he was obviously and appropiately angry and frustrated as displayed in his first post. After which Frogboy definitely responded with a "your an idiot"-esque reply which is understandable but not necessarly appropriate or advisable when corresponding with a customer, adding further foundation for mikro63's already existant anger over his "broken" product.

I give this analogy: the manufacturer of your car tells you that there is some necessary work to be done on your vehicle, possibly a component recall. After having the work completed you find that a specific component possibly custom to your model, and some other component you don't fully know the nomenclature of, is malfunctioning. In frustration you return to your dealership to have it fixed, only to have your service representative tell you that "the one component never did what you claimed and the second doesn't even exist" in a demeaning tone and asks you to leave. I'm pretty sure I would be furious and likely would never buy a car from that manufacturer again. And I would also ensure that everyone I knew heard about my problems.

Understanding your current distribution struggles with DX as listed in "Konfabulator Kicking DesktopX's widget butt" it would probably be best to try and hold onto the customers that you currently have, particularly by presenting an appreciative customer support policy, even if the customers requiring the support is presenting there problems in a negative tone. In the least it will show to the rest of your customers a respectable professionalism.

Just some words of advice.

Thank you Bootasven -- in any case I have already switched to Konfabulator. A superior product all around with the advantage that they don't demean their customers.

Ok this is a joy now..

I just downloaded version 2.40F[A].002 - or so it shows in the about.

Now I can RUN a widget and it works.. BUT. if I "IMPORT" the exact same widget, nothing works.

IE: The Calculator from Frogboy - https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=2&LibID=34
It loads but you cant do anything with it.

As for the LIST problem mentioned above, there is no "script" in the list now, so i cant see if any scripts are running.

I dont know what to tell you, but this latest update is more of a down-date. Please help us "loyal" DX widget users and creators!

Perhaps there should be some sort of "Important - Read this before installing pre-release software versions" link that shows up if a user selects "show pre-release version" option in SDCentral.

A read-me type article indicating that Alpha, Beta, and Release Candidates are not official releases and may contain bugs, and that it is therefore recommended that the user installs and archives the "Official Release" version first, before installing the (A), (, or (RC) version.

This would obviously allow the user to go into "Restore archive" and select the version that works well, until the pre-release version has the bugs worked out.
